Perineal massage for labor: benefits, method and important precautions

In the last weeks of pregnancy, many women worry about pain and vaginal stretching during delivery. Perineal massage is a technique that can help make vaginal tissues flexible during delivery, reducing the chances of tearing or episiotomy.

If you are going to be a mother for the first time or want to prepare your body for normal delivery, then perineal massage can be beneficial for you. In this article we will know what is perineal massage, what are its benefits, when and how it should be done, and what things are important to keep in mind.

What is perineal massage?

Perineal massage is a special type of massage technique that is done in the area (perineum) between the vagina and the anus. This massage prepares the skin and tissues for delivery, making them more flexible and soft. This is especially useful for women who are becoming mothers for the first time, as it reduces the chances of vaginal tearing or incision (episiotomy).

Benefits of perineal massage

✔ There is less chance of vaginal tearing during delivery.

✔ Can reduce the need for episiotomy (incision made in the vagina).

✔ Makes the vaginal tissues flexible, which can make delivery easier.

✔ Helps reduce pain and discomfort during delivery.

✔ Speeds up recovery after childbirth.

When to start perineal massage?

Perineal massage can be started only after the 34th to 36th week of pregnancy. It is beneficial to do it every day or 3-4 times a week. Regular practice develops the ability of the vagina to bear more stretch during delivery.

The right way to do perineal massage

1. Choose the right place and time
✔ Sit or lie down in a comfortable position.
✔ It is best to do this procedure after going to the toilet and before taking a bath.
✔ Wash your hands thoroughly and cut your nails short.

2. Choose the right oil

✔ Use coconut oil, olive oil, almond oil or oil containing vitamin-E.
✔ Avoid oils containing perfume and chemicals.
✔ Use the oil by heating it slightly so that it gets absorbed well into the skin.
